Boqueron BeachBoqueron Beach in Cabo Rojo is a welcoming seaside town and a Blue Flag Beach in Puerto Rico, an environmental program run worldwide awarding beaches the designation for meeting criteria including environmental management and education, services and safety, and above all, high water quality. Roughly a three-hour drive from San Juan, the friendly town has plenty of highlights including a scenic, crescent-shaped bay, a big helping of services, and a wonderful beach with easy access to open-air cafes, local food stalls, cantinas, and dive shops.

Due to its popularity and status as one of the best Cabo Rojo beaches, Boqueron Beach Puerto Rico can get crowded on weekends and holidays in the summer, yet the family-friendly atmosphere means crowds are amiable and there’s more clean fun than raucous partying. During the week, expect few crowds and a very peaceful backdrop with clear, calm surf. The mile or so of light, soft sand is flanked by water that is decidedly Caribbean in look and feel, meaning aquamarine and ultra-warm. It is part amenities and part atmosphere that draw visitors to Boqueron. The beach is laden with activities and has plenty of services making it an especially pleasant spot. Bicycle rentals, picnic tables, a playground, and a basketball court are also available. There are restrooms and showers as well as cabanas, all managed by the Puerto Rican government.

Tree-lined Boqueron Beach has plenty of shade so getting out of the hot sun is possible. If you’re looking for a shady spot for the day in the summer or weekend, be sure to arrive earlier in the morning to claim it. Once there, there are myriad activities and things to do to add to your day. Diving offshore and snorkeling around the reefs are both popular. There is also sailing, kite surfing, fishing, and boating to enjoy. Hiking is excellent along two main trails nearby, Vereda Helechal and Vereda Caracol. For a little more excitement, white water rafting is possible along the Guabo River.

One of the biggest benefits of Boqueron Beach Puerto Rico is the lack of Puerto Rico hotels adjacent to the beach, which keeps crowds thinned out and the expanse especially clean. There is only one option for beachside lodging and that is a set of budget-friendly apartment rentals along the main beach. They are owned and operated by the government, and are exceptionally popular, requiring a minimum of three months advanced reservations. There are also a few hotels nearby though, and the short trek makes it a worthwhile sacrifice with the end result being a beach that is peaceful and quiet. Staying in Boqueron Beach town has many benefits too. Showing off a funky, Caribbean edge, the community has a lot to offer including lodging, great restaurants, and plenty of souvenir shops.

Los Morillos is one of the must-see nearby attractions when visiting Boqueron Beach. The route to get there is via a hike through the lush and beautiful Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Reserve, which is also conveniently on the southwest part of the island near the beach. If hiking is something you enjoy, take some time to explore the twelve miles of trails within the park. Once at Los Morillos, the reward is a view of a stunning series of red-hued limestone cliffs, a wonderful rocky outcroppings, and the historic Los Morillos Lighthouse. The area is also a haven for wildlife, especially many species of sea birds.
